Iranian Intelligence Ministry Vows to Capture Cleric’s Killers
Iran’s Intelligence Ministry stressed that it will spare no effort to identify and take legal action against those behind the terrorist act in the Southeastern Iranian city of Zahedan that assassinated a Sunni cleric.
The ministry said in a statement on Thursday the prominent cleric had spent his life promoting dialogue, solidarity and national cohesion, by using his scientific, religious, cultural and social standing to strengthen Islamic brotherhood, promote proximity among religions and safeguard the dignity of Iranian ethnic communities. It added that Molavi Yousef Gorgij’s killing was a “bitter incident” for the people of Sistan and Baluchestan Province and all those committed to Iran’s security, unity and dignity.“Undoubtedly, the assassination of such figures is not a mere crime against individuals but also an assault on society’s security, unity, and social assets,” the statement emphasized.
The ministry warned those seeking to undermine Iran’s security and unity, stating that they should know that assassination would never suffocate the idea of unity, but would instead strengthen the Islamic approach of solidarity and brotherhood. The Iranian people, particularly the prudent and noble people of Sistan and Baluchestan, would never allow the blood of the martyrs to be used to create division between Shia and Sunni Muslims, it emphasized. The ministry expressed hope that Gorgij’s path, along with that of other martyrs of the acts of violence in the province and across Iran, would serve as a path toward greater solidarity, stronger unity, and respect for ethnic communities, national cohesion and Iran’s dignity.
Gorgij, the Sunni prayer leader of the Mohammad Rasoulallah Mosque in Zahedan, was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on Monday night. The attack took place outside his home.Gorgij’s assassination comes just several days after another religious figure, Kurdish cleric Mamosta Mohammad Nozhati, was assassinated in Iran’s Northwestern province of West Azerbaijan. No group or individual has claimed responsibility for either assassination, and investigations into both killings are ongoing.
