German Producer Inflation Accelerates to 4.6% in August, Exceeding Forecasts
Germany’s producer prices increased more than expected in August, driven by sharp rises in energy and intermediate goods costs, official data showed Friday.
Producer prices rose 4.6% in August from a year earlier, accelerating beyond the market forecast of 4.1%, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Anadolu news agency reported.On a monthly basis, prices increased 1.1%, also exceeding economists’ expectation of a 0.6% rise.Energy prices climbed 8.3% year-on-year and 3.2% month-on-month, making them the main contributor to the annual increase.Amid the conflict with Iran and the broader Middle East, prices for mineral oil products surged 40.5% from August 2025 and rose 4.9% from July.Heating oil prices jumped 65.3% annually, while naphtha and motor fuel prices increased 44.4% and 37.7%, respectively.Natural gas distribution prices rose 7.5% year-on-year, while electricity prices increased 1.7%. District heating prices, however, fell 0.5%.Excluding energy, producer prices advanced 3.1% annually and 0.2% monthly.Intermediate goods prices rose 6.1% from a year earlier, led by a 14.8% increase in metal prices. Precious metals and copper products both became 34.6% more expensive, while basic chemical prices climbed 11.2%.Capital goods prices increased 2.4% annually, and durable consumer goods prices rose 2.1%.In contrast, non-durable consumer goods prices fell 2% year-on-year as food prices declined 4.3%.Butter prices plunged 40.5%, while pork and beef prices dropped 16.3% and 9.3%, respectively. Vegetable oil prices, however, increased 17.5%.
